Read moreOur February Employee of the Month is Joe Wheeler!
Joe's nomination was full of praise for his success in a new role, saying:
“It's been a busy month in the team but Joe has handled it seamlessly. Joe has been fantastic in training new starters, getting up to speed on tasks and clients while handling a couple of 'will-they, won't they, when-will-they?!' site migration projects. I've also been super impressed by his proactivity, ingenuity and commitment to development - exemplified by the excellent organic search training matrix he's created and presented to the wider department. Top work, Joe! 👏🏻💥🚚”
We caught up with Joe to talk about his professional background, hobbies and his time as a Digital Marketer.
Could you tell us more about your role?
I am an SEO specialist at ClickThrough and I tend to work mostly on technical SEO. My role involves auditing and understanding the technical health of our client's websites, and working with marketing and development teams to get the issues fixed.
What were you doing before ClickThrough?
Before ClickThrough I worked in a couple of more general marketing roles which gave me a really good understanding of the different components of the marketing mix. I originally started out working in content-focused roles as I did a professional writing degree at university, but found myself gravitating more to the technical elements of marketing, which led to me to wanting to pursue a career in SEO.
Tell us something you've gained from working at ClickThrough.
While working at ClickThrough, I've had lots of great opportunities to develop my skills and expertise. I've been mentored by Al Rowe on web development and improved my coding skills to help me deliver better technical SEO insights. As well as this, working at the agency has given me exposure to a huge variety of businesses in different industries, so I think the main thing I've gained is experience!
Is there anything you've done as a hobby in the past that has helped your career?
I've had a couple of hobbies outside of work that have given me some good knowledge that I've been able to apply to my work in the agency, such as building my own websites and learning Python. Building my own website and writing content for it gave me the opportunity to experiment and try some different approaches to SEO, and I've used Python to write scripts that have helped me to get things done more efficiently!
What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in Digital Marketing?
My main advice would be to start off by working a general marketing role, and specialise once you've had exposure to all of the different aspects of marketing. Not only will this mean that you specialise in an area you're truly passionate about, it will also mean that you have a much better understanding of how marketing works in general, and how all of the different pieces fit together.
What three things would you say a Digital Marketer needs in 2025?
I think digital marketers need to be able to adapt to change, as everything feels like it's moving so quickly in recent years with the wide-spread adoption of AI, and changes to our ability to track performance metrics. We also need an integrated mindset, as there is so much overlap between different channels in the marketing mix. Finally, digital marketers need a consumer-centric approach, as users should always be at the heart of everything we do, rather than the platforms we use!
What are you planning to spend your voucher on?
Clothes, probably!
